A customer was in recently and showed me a photo of a lucite table she bought similar to the one featured here. I knew I had seen it somewhere and wherever it was I liked it. Sure enough it was in Domino. The owner of this table and fabulous bright and beautiful bungalow in Los Angeles is fashion designer Johnson Hartig. Such a fun and inspiring home.

Pretty in Pink

I don't know what lions and decorating have to do with one another, but that's part of the fun of blogging I guess. I recently came across these beautiful photographs of Elsa the lioness with Joy Adamson (1910-1980). She raised the cub with her husband, George and later penned the experience in "Born Free" (1966). To me, there is something about the pink in these rooms that works next to Elsa.

I cannot believe "Decorate" came out more than six months ago and it took me till now to look at it. It's GREAT! Written by Holly Becker of Decor8 and Joanna Copestick, "Decorate" is 288 pages of F-A-B home inspiration and dare I say......as good as "Domino"??? I can't put it down. Needless to say a stack of copies is on its way to the store.

When it comes to creative genes, Kate and Andy Spade got an extra helping. Their apartment in New York is filled with so much eye candy it is hard to focus (in a good "can't focus" kind of way!). Yet, even with all the rare and gorgeous pieces, the space still feels warm and welcoming. Not easy to do, but they master it beautifully.

When 'Downtown Chic' was published in 09' I posted about its stars, designers Robert and Courtney Novogratz. Two years later the two are still going strong, creating some of the wildest, most gorgeous interiors I've seen. It's hard to believe they are parents to seven children. I hope you weren't alarmed if you heard a loud scream coming from this direction late last week. It was just me opening the box of Deborah Needleman's new book, 'The Perfectly Imperfect Home'. The editor of 'Domino' has done it again! The book reads like a good friend sharing decorating advise (the kind that will make your home F-A-B). And rather than photos, the pages are beautifully illustrated by Virginia Johnson (think Kate Spade watercolors). Well worth the wait.

When it comes to faces, Stella Tenant's rocks. But not only does the Scottish native have great features, she's got great style. The home she shares with her French photographer husband, David Lasnet and their four children in Scotland is one of my favorites - bright, beautiful and comfortable. It's no wonder she was Karl Lagerfeld's muse and the one chosen to help put Burberry back on the map.

If I could spend an afternoon with any designer it would probably be Delphine Krakoff, the wife of Coach executive, Reed Krakoff (he'd have to join us). The Paris native is such an amazing talent. Andrew Martin paper

My BFF was visiting from the UK this weekend and showed me 'love letters' wallpaper by Andrew Martin (above). So fun. I checked out the designer's website to see what else he has going on and liked the way he styled the spaces for the papers featured here. If you are in the market for wallpaper, go see Maura Buckley of Etc (located at Suburban Paint 8 Main Street in Millburn). She has done a beautiful job setting up her wares in front of the shop and has a great assortment of books to peruse. She can also order Andrew Martin paper! Powder rooms, foyers and guest rooms are the perfect opportunity to have fun with your walls!

This one is my favorite. I've seen book papers before, but this one is just great!

I've always liked India Hicks and not just because she is beautiful or because her father was the very talented designer David Hicks OR because she was Princess Diana's flower girl (well maybe that helps a little bit). I like her because she has great style. Her home in the Bahamas is a testament to that - beautiful yet relaxed. Such a great combination.

When it comes to color and pattern designer Kathryn Ireland rocks. I have yet to see Million Dollar Decorators on Bravo, in which she stars, but I've followed the British born, LA based designer and her work for years. Check out this video of her orchestrating one of her projects. Love her energy and drive.

If you haven't already, I suggest running, yes running, to the nearest newsstand and grabbing the October issue of Veranda. The magazine teamed with interior designer Windsor Smith and a slew of other talent to create the House of Windsor. It is fabulous! I was only able to find a few images online to post and they don't do it justice. Buy a copy and see what you think. Have a nice weekend.

Fall Inspiration

This is the time of year when I normally start to look around my house and think of all the things I don't like and want to change. When I need inspiration I can count on Little Blue Deer to deliver. Summer style with Gwyneth and Meg

Summer makes me think of the feature House and Garden did back in 07' on Gwyneth Paltrow's gorgeous summer home in the Hamptons. While posting it here I was reminded of the spread Elle Decor did last year of Meg Ryan's vacation spot on Martha's Vineyard and decided to add it. Their styles are similar, I think. Both homes are so beautiful and make me wish summer could last forever.

Whenever I feel the need to be inspired I look at interior designer Daryl Carter's book The New Traditional. Based in Washington DC, Carter's work is so serene and easy on the eye. I love the way he mixes new and old. His spaces look so clean and simple, yet when you look closely there is a lot going on.

Undecorate

Saturday was visiting day at camp. The three hour trip allowed ample time to catch up on my favorite past time - design books. Although I had browsed the pictures in "Undecorate" by DwellStudio founder Christiane Lemieux, I had not had a chance to read it until now. Along with beautiful and inspiring images, the book is filled with wonderfully written features on each of the homeowners. Each story left me hungry for another. If you haven't bought the book yet I highly recommend it. I'm sold out (again), but just placed a re-order.

Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair

On my current favorites list is the Arne Jacobsen egg chair. Besides being comfortable, it is such a gorgeous design. Designed in 1958 for the lobby of the Radisson hotel in Copenhagen, I'm so glad it made it into the mainstream.

The beauty of the chair is that it works in any decor. Even Bunny Williams found a home for it in this traditional setting.

There are so many things I love in the room above I don't know where to begin.

Hope you had a great holiday weekend. I was so happy to open the latest issue of Architectural Digest and see this home on Folly Beach, SC. My parents live there and I'm headed that way for a visit in a couple of weeks. Located just outside of Charleston, the area is so relaxed and pretty, just like this house. I can't wait to look for it when we're walking on the beach.

I always look for the work of photographer Laura Resen when flipping through shelter magazines. Her photographs make me want to crawl inside the pages and stay a while. Featured here are photos she took of her NYC apartment and more recently her home in the country. Her office above is one of my all time favorite spaces.

Resen photographed her living room for two magazines. It's fun to see the way it was styled differently for each one. Subtle changes make such a difference. And of course, the pouf makes a big statement. Available at Shed $240.

I recognized Heller's LOVE LOVE LOVE painting hanging in Courtney Cox's Malibu home. With clients like Molly Sims and Courtney Cox on his roster Heller's got to be pretty pumped. Matthew Heller

In keeping with my words-as-art obsession, I was so excited to find a website for artist Matthew Heller. I first discovered Heller when one of his pieces was featured in the home of actress Molly Sims in the now defunct magazine In Style Home (such a loss). The three paintings below are available in print version on his website here. I'm trying to figure out where I can put one.

I'm big on daydreaming. One recurring theme is how I would decorate a little pied-a-terre in New York if I had one that was all mine. Have to say it would be pretty swell if it looked anything like this one owned by Sally Hershberger - hair stylist to the stars (think Meg Ryan shag). It's so chic and girly. Love all the pink. I think she recently sold the apartment to Jennifer Aniston. Read all about it here.

At home with Nancy and OB in Summit

Shed: You have had people ask about registering your home as an historical property when in fact it isn't old.

Nancy O'Brien: OB (Bill O'Brien) built the house in 1985/86 and modeled it after a New England Salt Box. This is OB's little piece of Vermont in Summit.
Shed: What's the story with the floors?

NO'B: Shortly after putting the floors in, the white oak shrunk leaving wide gaps between the boards. We decided to paint as a quick fix using two colors which we rolled on simultaneously. We started at 9 at night and painted ourselves out of the room at 1 a.m.. We love the result.
Shed: Great coffee table.

NO'B: It is a cobbler's bench we picked up antiquing in PA.

Shed: Your kitchen is the epitome of warm and welcoming.

NO'B: We love to entertain and it all seems to revolve around OB's cooking and the island. OB can open the spice cabinet and create a gourmet meal for a crowd. The more the merrier!

Shed: So many fun collections scattered throughout the house.

NO'B: The scales and bowling pins were finds from many of our spontaneous antiquing treks.

Shed: And these bottles?

NO'B: We've collected them for years from our trips domestically and abroad.
Baskets overflowing with fabrics Nancy sources overseas as a flight attendant for her line Magpie Designs.

Shed: From the looks of the fireplace it's hard to believe the house is only 26 years old.

NO'B: This room was originally the kitchen. The fireplace is 5' x 5 ' 3' and has a big crane so that we can actually cook over the fire. It's great for entertaining.

Shed: You two obviously love blue.

NO'B: Traveling the back roads of France, we fell in love with the old stone houses and the color blue they were all trimmed in. The bedroom was painted around one of the fabrics from my spring collection.

On The Farm

How excited was I yesterday to see this article in the NYTimes titled The Decorated Shed. Such a beautiful job the owners have done creating this wonderful farm home in PA. I first discovered the very talented Thomas O'Brien many years ago when his New York apartment was featured in House Beautiful. Since then I have been hooked on his warm modern aesthetic. His Soho shop, Aero Studio, is chock full of amazing accessories and design inspiration. Get a good view of the store here. Well worth a visit if you haven't been.

It's fun to watch how O'Brien's living room has morphed from super clean and simple above....

to this.....

to now this.... he went ahead and moved his bedroom into the living room. Genius!

There is nothing like a great entry to set the stage for what is to come. Whether it's clean and simple or fun and loud, an entry says so much about a home. I tried for two years to find the perfect entry table and when I couldn't I had one made. I'm still on the hunt for a good rug, but all good things take time.
