Barn Beauty

Very excited to see this Connecticut farmhouse in the Wall Street Journal, which was revamped by architect Doug Wright who lives in Maplewood and New York designer Fawn Galli. Their combined know-how resulted in updating the existing structure (circa 1830) and adding this fabulous black painted barn with walls of glass. The 6,000 square-foot project was done for a New York couple and their three teenage sons who spend weekends here. Simply stunning. Check out the article here.

The walls are whitewashed and the sisal rug is painted white, which is a great way to make the art and furnishings pop.

Some of the furnishings and accessories are switched out seasonally to keep the house ready-to-go year round, said Galli, adding, "When things started feeling too grandma, we mucked it up a bit."

The velvet upholstered banquette spans 18 feet. A ledge was added behind it for art and drinks.

A twin size day bed is in the kitchen. Brilliant! Wright had the floors painted red then aged to match the patina finish throughout the rest of the house.

   

In the contemporary addition, Wright kept things old-world by incorporating re-used baseboards, trim and floor planks.

There are few window treatments in the house to keep things modern and open to the outdoor scenery.
